2010- Colorado Youth Violence Prevention Summit

Program Description

Youth have the power within themselves to effect positive, productive lasting change in their communities and engage in shaping their own futures.  Too often youth have good ideas and insightful solutions, but have no opportunity to gather and discuss these ideas with community leaders and policy makers.  If you are one of the many youth who have a strong desire to shape your own future and that of your community for a more positive future but just don't know where to begin, The Keystone Center (TKC) has the program for you.  We believe that youth need opportunities to engage in their own futures and has developed the Youth Policy Summit on Violence Prevention to help them achieve that goal.  Since 1975, The Keystone Center has been helping youth and adults make a positive impact within their communities.

In partnership with the Injury, Suicide, and Violence Prevention Unit (ISVP) of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), The Keystone Center (TKC) will engage students in civic and public policy practices addressing issues within CDPHE's Bold Steps Toward Child and Adolescent Health: A Plan for Youth Violence Prevention in Colorado.  The goal of the program is for youth to develop a set of policy recommendations to take back to their communities in an effort to strengthen community-level partnerships and connect youth with caring adults.

Through the Youth Policy Summit (YPS),The Keystone Center will help high school aged youth in Colorado examine and address the cultural, political, economic, social and community issues related to youth violence prevention programs in their communities.  This program will bring together 25 youth from the state for a four-day Summit in Keystone, Colorado in the Spring of 2010.  Following the Summit, youth will use the leadership, mediation and policy discussion skills learned through YPS to host a lively forum discussion on youth violence prevention policies with community leaders in their hometowns.
